Polar Pilot said it all but I'll add my 2 cents worth anyway. The Savage is a great starter bike. I owned an '87 and loved it. Put 30,000 miles on it in 3 years. My wife is still a beginner and she loves her '96 Savage as well. I started her out on a Yamaha 550 Maxim and she hated it. The Savage is much easier to ride, has plenty of power, and is relatively easy to maintain. The belt drive is a big plus, no messy chain or heavy shaft. I also suggest you start with a used bike, just until you have enough experience to decide what kind of riding you want to do next. You may end up with several different types of bikes for whatever type of riding you're in the mood for. Lots of us do.

Good luck.
